2010 - What a start to the Year
Welcome to 2010.
Like you we have been battling with the weather, with our northern operations in Rochdale and North Wales, under almost unprecedented falls of snow; saving animals and police cars from snow drifts; two staff houses flooded from pipe bursts and frequent power failures at the main office which showed that our UPS was more of an IPS. We have hopefully got through the worst of it.
James Dodds published an article in December issue of Mineral Planning magazine (Article link) 20100118170659078.pdfon ground source heat from wet restored quarries; combining our unique expertise in quarrying hydrogeology and hydrology and Thermogeology.
We look forward to starting the year with some interesting independent water supply projects for chemical works, breweries, golf courses and irrigation; and we are looking forward to the UK Irrigation Association Conference on Water & Food Security on Thursday 4 March in Peterborough. Dr Phil Ham – Employee of the Year
At the annual JDIH Envireau Christmas luncheon, Dr Phil Ham was awarded the JDIH Envireau Employee of the Year trophy. The presentation was made by director John Findlay who expressed the company’s view that through difficult times all the staff had put in extra effort and that it was particularly difficult to select an individual. Phil had contributed at a high level across a wide range of activities both within and externally to the company. We all congratulate Phil for the endeavour he has made this year.
As part of the Employee of the Year Phil will hold the charity baton for the 2010, selecting the charity that we will make our Christmas donation to and he will also organise charity fund raising over the coming year. He will have a challenge to beat last year’s total of £1500 raised by Penny Jenkinson, on behalf of Water Aid and the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
Flood Risk Assessment
For many, the idea of a 1 in 100 year storm let alone the 1 in 1000 year storm conjures up thoughts of “not in my lifetime”. However, the recent 1 in 1000 year flood event at Cockermouth, Cumbria should serve to eliminate that thought. Our thoughts go out to those affected.
Even though it is difficult to plan for events like these, it highlights the importance of conducting circumspect Flood Risk Assessments (FRA’s) for new developments leading to an appropriate storm water management design.
Following this event it is likely that the approval of FRA’s by the regulators will be much more stringent requiring robust technical back-up. JDIH Envireau provides these services for a wide range of clients in the UK.
