Ground source heating and cooling (GSH&C) involves the recovery of low-grade heat from the ground or the disposal of heat into the ground, utilising heat pumps.

There are two basic systems:

  • Open Loop
  • Closed Loop

GSH&C systems can be designed to provide less than 10kWof energy to several MW, of energy.

The fundamental science behind heat transport in the ground is directly analogous to groundwater flow. In fact commonly used groundwater analysis is based on heat flow theory. The assessment of GSH&C is therefore an extension of hydrogeology. This extension is often referred to as "Thermogeology".

JDIH Envireau has unrivalled expertise in thermogeology in the UK, and has been instrumental in its development, by giving specialist courses and bespoke courses to the Environment Agency as well as assisting the Environment Agency with the development of national policy, developed strategy and general risk assessment.

JDIH Envireau hydrogeologists and thermogeologists, working with specialist associates together with installation contractors, are able to provide support to your GSH&C project from concept development, through risk assessment to installation and regulatory permitting.

Borehole design, layout design, modelling, risk analysis, thermal breakthrough, drilling/contract management.

JDIH Envireau are one of the (very) few independent consultants that own and operate a Thermal Response Test rig. This allows us to provide a fully independent testing, data analysis and design service for closed loop systems. Download a briefing note on Thermal Response Testing here.

JDIH Envireau has produced a briefing note about Ground Source Heating & Cooling which can be downloaded here.

While there is a reluctance in the building industry in obtaining high quality, independent, technical advice early on in a project; doing so can avoid costly misconceptions;mistakes and worse still. delays beyond Stage D of a project. JDIH Envireau provide extremely cost-effective input from Stage A.
