What We Do - Borehole Water Supply

JDIH Envireau specialises in water supply projects and provides four key roles:
- Design & Management
- Regulatory Liaison
- Rehabilitation
- Forensic Investigation
Our design and management services cover all aspects of independent water supply development from feasibility through design to construction and commissioning and as, important full liaison, negotiation and management of the regulatory processes.
We have specific experience of borehole design from 10m to over 400m in depth, in hard rock, carbonate rock and unconsolidated strata. Borehole siting is undertaken using state of the art geophysical techniques and we work with contractors that we know and trust are capable of undertaking the work required. Projects can be run on a turnkey basis or following the more conventional consultant / contractor basis. We are familiar with all forms of contract including ICE and FIDIC. Specialist technical skills include artificial recharge and Aquifer Storage and Recovery as well as specialist acidisation programs, rehabilitation and remediation design.
As the value of water is being recognised unused or under utilised boreholes are being brought back into operation. The wealth of experience held by JDIH Envireau allows us to survey existing assets, review their regulatory position and provide honest, independent and appropiate advice regarding their potential and the nedd for any ameliovative work.
Surface Water Abstraction
As groundwater resources become more difficult to exploit due to tighter regulatory control, abstraction from rivers and streams is once again becoming more popular. We are able to advise on and design river abstraction systems and associated storage reservoirs from initial resource assessment and analysis of the risk of supply failure, through abstraction point (takeoff) design and on to abstraction licence application and negotiation. Associated studies with river abstractions and reservoir development often include ecological studies which we design and manage in a way that is appropriate to the risk posed by the development.
Storage Reservoirs
The development of reservoirs to store water abstracted during periods of high flow (winter storage reservoirs) is becoming and increasingly important method of water management and is being heavily promoted by the regulatory authorities and government.
Where appropiate and possible, JDIH Envireau provides support and assistance in identifying and securing construction grants.
JDIH Envireau can supply you with the skills and experience to plan, design and manage your reservoir development project to a high standard, but taking account of the appropriate needs of the business objectives.
Abstraction Licensing
As water resources become less and less available and regulatory control becomes tighter and tighter, abstraction licensing becomes more and more difficult. JDIH Envireau is probably the UK’s leading independent specialist in abstraction licensing and licence management.
JDIH Envireau is actively involved in the development of studies and investigations to support abstraction licence applications and renewals that deliver the requirements of the regulator and the needs of the abstractor. This may involve the implementation of monitoring systems several years before licence renewal; as well as reducing monitoring requirements on new licences.
JDIH have a wealth of experience in negotiating abstraction licences in some of the most difficult areas of the country and have a reputation for being dogged in our approach. While we cannot guarantee success, we can guarantee that we will explore every possibility.
Of increasing importance in water related projects is consultation and negotiation with the regulatory agencies involved in the management of water and the environment, including the Environment Agency, English Nature, CCW, SEPA and Scottish Natural Heritage. We maintain a close and positive working relationship with the individuals within the regional and local offices of these organisations. These relationships are essential in helping our clients achieve their goals by supporting them through negotiations and by using innovative approaches. This has led to JDIH Envireau being instrumental in obtaining water resources for clients from previously closed systems.
Licence Trading
In catchment areas closed to new abstraction, licence trading is often the only way to obtain a 'new' abstraction licence. Whilst straightforward in principle, trading can be fraught with difficulty and meet regulatory reluctance.
JDIH Envireau is a leader in licence trading, from identifying possible trading partmers to sorting out the regulatory issues.
